Mental Health Crisis Tips for Caregivers, Family, & Friends

  • Lock up all firearms &  ammunition  (if this is impossible, then please attempt to limit the individual’s access to weapons)

  • Keep person away from sharp objects including knives, razors, and 

  • Keep person away medications, chemicals, and poisons

  • No alcohol or drugs (limits decision making and increases impulsivity)

  • Show you care by listening without judgement

  • Encourage the use of healthy coping skills

  • Try distraction techniques such as movies, games, drives, music, or activities

  • If the person’s condition worsens or gets unsafe, please call 911 or the suicide prevention hotline
